Japanese Best Friend Dolls
Japanese Best Friend Dolls from Interplay is aimed at young girls aged 8 plus and allows them to make and decorate their own Japanese ‘ Kokeshi ’ Dolls. Kokeshi is an enchanting Japanese tradition where by you hand paint dolls to give to friends. My eldest daughter Chloe, aged 9 years old received a Japanese Best Friend Dolls set a few weeks back to try out for herself. She’s been nagging me for a while to do it but I must admit I had been putting it off as I’m a little afraid of “Messy” activities. Well, eventually I gave in and we sat down at the table ready to go. I opened the box to find these:
There was 3 wooden dolls and all the paints and accessories you needed to make them into your friends gifts. It didn’t look hard or messy at all to my relief. Chloe got straight to work, I say work but she had lots of fun doing them.
The paint included was nice and thick so painting was really easy to do. We did get a little messy but we had so much fun, we didn’t mind. Chloe made two of the dolls for her best friends at school whilst I made the third doll as a gift for her. Yes, I know – I’m a big kid but I wanted a go too seeing as she looked like she was having such a good time. Once I got into it, I actually quite enjoyed myself but Shhh, don’t tell anyone else that. Here’s our finished dolls, just look at how cool they are. Chloe can’t wait to give them to her school friends on Monday.
The little scrolls of paper that you can see are Secret Messages that you write and then roll up to put inside the dolls. Such a lovely idea. On Chloe’s I simply wrote “Mummy Always Loves You” which I thought would be nice for her to look at when I’m telling her off sometimes.
