Last night was the opening night for Derren Brown’s Showman, live at The Alexander Theatre in Birmingham, and wow what a show it was. I had an amazing time!
The actual content of Showman remains a closely guarded secret but Derren revealed: “The heart of the show is about remembering what’s important. Like how the very things that we find most isolating in life – our fears and difficulties – actually connect us. Framed with what I think will be some extraordinary demonstrations of my voodoo”.
The show started at 7:30 pm promptly and ended around 10:20 pm which had over run slightly but I could have quite happily sat there for much longer. I was mesmerised and completely under his spell, a little more than I would have liked to have been, I think. As a non believer in magic, or what I’d class as not real, I was a little sceptical about it all.
But my good friend Dee and I were very excited to see him live on stage. Neither of us had seen him live before but were huge fans of his work. It was an exciting night for us.
There were many parts to the show, all building up to a spectacular finale. There was lots of audience participation throughout, all of which is completely voluntary, you’ll be happy to know. The show was intriguing and very fascinating, it had us on the edge of our seats.
Derren Brown is great up there on that stage. He really draws you in and keeps you entertained. There’s a lot of listening and watching but there’s a lot to pay attention too.
We had a wonderful night and came away with so much to think about.

Dee and I both had a fantastic night. This show was a real rollercoaster of everything. There were moments that shocked us, moments that surprised us, and moments that even made us cry.
