When do they Stay Dry?
Little man is 4 now and toilet training is proving to be a bit of a nightmare. He’s not in nappies during the day, he hasn’t been for the past year or so but he is at night time. I’m getting worried that he’s too old to be still wearing them in bed but then I think, How old is too old?
Even during the day is proving to be so much hard work. He is constantly wetting himself, surely he shouldn’t be still doing this at his age. We have ups and downs, he can go for weeks without a single accident but then he has weeks where he wets himself every day.
Last year in Nursery he did ok, he’d go to the toilet by himself but needed reminding quite often. It was acceptable to send in a bag of spare clothes when he was there as lots of children his age had accidents every now and again but tomorrow he will starting Reception which is a whole new ball game. I’m so scared of what’s going to happen there, will they remind him enough about going to the toilet or will they just leave him until he wets himself.
I can’t take in a bag of spare uniform, that would be silly. He’s a big boy now. He doesn’t seem to understand why I’m getting so upset with him lately, he doesn’t seem bothered. I don’t get why he is being so lazy. Yes, I understand that sometimes he might be busy playing and not want to leave what he is doing but how do I get him to understand that he has too?
Most Mummies will be waving their kids off tomorrow worrying about how they will get on whilst I will be there worrying about whether he’s going to wet himself or not. I know I’m going to have to have that awkward conversation with his new teacher, the one where I ask her if she can please remind him to go frequently. Is this normal at his age or am I alone?
My girls were very different, they were both out of nappies completely by now but people keep telling me that boys are different to girls when it comes to toilet training.
What can I do to get him out of nappies at night? How do I get him to go to the toilet and stop wetting himself? If you have any advice please do leave it below, I’m running out of ideas.
The worst part is, I feel like he’s the only one doing this and I’m embarrassed to ask the other playground mums incase he is. I’m hoping we’re not alone on this one, I really am.
As a reception teacher, I just wanted to let you know there are lots of children still in your sons situation. Firstly, it is definitely ok to send in spare clothes particularly pants trousers socks if he is still regularly wetting, most children will have these in case of accidents and the school will definitely be grateful rather than having to search for spare clothes to put him in. Also if you think it's a question of your son needing to be reminded, discuss this with his teacher who will be able to ensure he is regularly reminded.
